Marching Band has a New Standard: USBands
The Cadets Present USBands to better define role in activity
With the dawning of the year 2012, Youth Education in the Arts (YEA!) is proud to announce that effective immediately the US Scholastic Band Association (USSBA) will be known as USBands.
For nearly 14 years, th US Scholastic Band Association, best known as the USSBA, has been providing opportunities for bands of all levels of acheivement to perform, grow and challenge their students on football fields across the United States. All the while, the organization was challenged with a name that was difficult to understand and didn't clearly represent the activity and mission set forth by the program.
George Hopkins, CEO of YEA! said in making this announcement, "We are at a place in our organizational history where it is important for us to make it easier for people to understand what it is we do in supporting the wonderful educators and magnificent young people through USBands."
Hopkins added, "It has always been important for us to connect the brand back to The Cadets in a meaningful way and with the role as "presenter" we believe we can reinforce those qualities that define what it is we do. The Cadets have always stood for excellence and innovation in the marching activity, and we want that same tradition to infuse itself throughout everything we do and represent in USBands."
As part of the changeover, a new USBands website is now active at USBands.org and will be experiencing a great deal of upgrades over the coming months to make the interactions between band directors, judges, volunteers, parents and students much easier and engaging. USBands is also transitioning its Facebook page from facebook.com/ussba to facebook.com/usbands. The Twitter handle will remain "USBands".
Hopkins said, "We are ready to hit the ground running with a renewed commitment to the educators, judges, volunteers and students as demonstrated through this name change. It is clear from all of our dealings that our philosophy and our approach to the activity is what makes us unique and will allow us to sustain and grow the program. As with every endeavor, we always need to strive to improve. Beginning now, we intend to deliver Cadets-quality experiences through each interaction an individual may have with USBands."

The Cadets
Founded in 1934 in Garfield, New Jersey, THE CADETS are the third oldest continually operating drum and bugle corps next to the Racine Scouts (1927) and have one of the most extensive histories of any drum and bugle corps active today. They initially were sponsored by the Holy Name parish and were called the Holy Name Cadets. The Holy Name parish would not sponsor the corps in the 1958 American Legion Finals so the corps competed as the Garfield Cadets. The name of the corps was changed officially to the Garfield Cadets as Holy Name parish ceased their relationship with the corps. Many years later, the corps' name changed to Cadets of Bergen County and eventually simply to The Cadets.
They hold several distinctions, being one of the few charter corps of DCI who have attended every championship held, being the only World Class (formerly Division I) corps to step off on the right foot, as well as being the second most successful corps in the DCI circuit with ten world champion titles over three decades. The Cadets have moved their headquarters from Garfield, New Jersey, to Bergenfield, and then to Allentown, PA, where the DCI Eastern Classic is held. The corps is known for unique and risky moves, such as using vocals throughout an entire show.
The Cadets have been DCI Division I World Champions ten times, in 1983, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1990, 1993, 1998, 2000 (undefeated), 2005, and 2011. The three consecutive victories from 1983-1985 were the first "three-peat" in DCI history, and is the only corps to do so without including a tie for the title with another corps. The corps has also placed second six times (1992, 1994, 1995, 1997, 2001, and 2007) and third five times (1982, 1996, 2002, 2003, and 2009).
In 2005, The Cadets won all caption awards as well as all sub-caption awards.
The Cadets share the world record for the highest score in DCI history with a score of 99.150 with The Cavaliers (2002) for their 2005 show "The Zone: Dreamscapes in Four Parts with a Door".

Drum Corps International
Drum Corps International (DCI), formed in 1972, is the non-profit governing body operating the North American drum and bugle corps circuit for junior corps, whose members are between the ages of 14 and 21. It is the counterpart of Drum Corps Associates (DCA) which governs senior or all-age drum corps. DCI consists of only a small full-time executive and administrative staff in Indianapolis, Indiana.[1] Policy is created, carried out, and enforced by the Board of Directors, which is primarily composed of the executive directors of its member corps. The board meets several times a year to discuss the issues facing the activity, as well as what the possibilities are for further developing the corps for the following season.
The primary purpose of a DCI corps is to provide a life changing experience for youth through the art of marching music performance. Their competitive summer tour, consisting of DCI-sanctioned competitions (known as the Summer Music Games) throughout the United States and Canada, culminate in August with the week-long DCI World Championships. Many other drum corps associations around the world are based upon DCI. It continues a tradition of exceptionally high-quality drum corps, with membership in the top corps highly sought after and extremely competitive, attracting the interest of potential members from many countries.
